The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog

An alphabetical portrait of the Southside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn - through its non-human residents.
Who rules the streets? In the Southside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, you might think its real estate developers, aggressive cab drivers, and roving groups of hipsters. And while in some moments this may be true, let us go on a slightly different tour of the neighborhood – one led by the the area’s animalian residents of all forms and sizes – from ants to steak, and everything in between. A quirky and fast-paced film structured around the English alphabet, this piece aims to humorously present the elements that compose this diverse and rapidly changing pocket of New York City.

Director’s Statement

“This work was originally inspired by our interest in how animals in densely populated urban areas see the world and interact with their settings. The geographic area of focus – the Southside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, also known as Los Sures – has one of the lowest ratios of green space-to-population in all of New York City, seemingly leaving little room for animals. However, the more we looked, the more we saw animals flourishing all around us.

Our work took us through various iterations of how to portray the animals and the surrounding neighborhood. Playing with tropes seen in nature films such as anthropomorphization and long observational shots, we bring in the familiar, but also the humorous. Adding a political angle, we also incorporate elements that fit into the greater definition of “animal” but with a darker twist such as raw meat, dead birds and fish bait. The alphabetical structure of the film then provides context through witty associations and juxtapositions while guiding the viewer through the neighborhood.
