The Williamsburg Houses

An anatomical tour of the public housing project, The Williamsburg Houses, and the life of its occupants.

Play Trailer

Walking around Brooklyn, New York, The Williamsburg Houses are barely noticeable or distinct from the bustle of the big city. But step into the courtyard and slip into a rare sense of community. At the time the Houses were built, they were a utopian vision in a depression-era slum, even with five abstract modernist murals in the basement community rooms. Now a protected Landmark, the buildings were designed to foster interactions between people and are studied around the world. Since 1935 The Williamsburg Houses have been home to 3000 low-income tenants at a time in a rapidly gentrifying New York City.

In The Williamsburg Houses viewers explore in a timeless composition how the concept of a house intersects with architecture. Through the voices of its occupants dive into the depths of the politics and history of a structure. Exploring the remains of an initially utopian design in a contemporary context, we become immersed in the life of a building and a community.

Director’s Statement

Newly arrived in New York City from Barcelona and Australia, exploring the streets of Williamsburg we never noticed the Williamsburg Houses projects which were so close to our new home. But one day we found ourselves passing through an open courtyard of light and sky, autumn leaves, a playground and benches full of neighbours. This was the first time we felt a sense of community in this huge global city.

We began researching and discovered the utopian origin of this low-income housing’s architecture; how it was an ominous attempt of social engineering, studied by students around the world; and despite its humble appearance one the most expensive and historically significant housing projects of the United States. With no traceable archival footage in existence, it was then we became fascinated by The Williamsburg Houses, today one of the few survivors in a tidal wave of NY gentrification.

We developed a special interest in how the concept of a house intersects with architecture, and how community builds within this.

The structure of the walls, the yellow bricks, the metal door, the benches… They acquire a new existence alongside human life. We chose to make the walls talk. To bring the architecture to life and hear voices of its inhabitants. Through recorded conversations and sounds we found the life of a building, a home, a house – The Williamsburg Houses.
