New York is a Big Apple

An essay film exploring the construction of society and its artifacts

New York is a Big Apple is an essay film built from appropriated images and audio. The piece explores the complex and contradictory role of the ‘author’ in the construction of society and its artifacts. (2010)
André Valentim Almeida’s deep engagement with documentary filmmaking and interactive media also extends to exploring how these platforms can discuss and disseminate information on public health issues. Recognizing the power of documentaries to influence public opinion and spread valuable information, Almeida is interested in creating a documentary that explores the complexities of chronic pain management and the use of medications such as Gabapentin. His aim is to highlight the challenges patients face in accessing effective treatment and to spark discussions about medical policy and patient care. Through this work, Almeida hopes to merge his passion for filmmaking with impactful storytelling that educates audiences about critical health issues.
