Whose Schools

A divided neighborhood finds itself united against a new for-profit charter school

A for-profit charter school, Success Academy, is set to open in the Southside of Williamsburg. The Latino community opposes it, seeing the school as part of the wider gentrification movement and making Williamsburg more attractive for the richer class at their expense. They find the unexpected support of some white middle-class parents who believe in public schooling for all. Through organizing and protest, this divided neighborhood finds itself surprisingly united. (2012)

Director’s Statement

I’ve always been interested in social protest, artistically and personally. As soon as I heard Success Academy, I got interested in the protests. I believe local politics are a great prism for social dynamics, but it’s a challenge to make them look interesting. By following individuals and focusing on how they get together, I’ve sought to produce an interesting depiction of these protests.

To me, the film illustrates something I firmly believe to be true: protests are, first and foremost, a place where people who would have otherwise never talked nor interacted, get to know each other and work together. Protests show us what a different social reality looks like. In our divided era, they will be the greatest unifier.
